How do fractures differ from sprains?

A sprain you can wrap and will heal on its own, a fracture needs to be set. I thought I sprained my ankle last year and after 6 weeks of it only getting worse, went to the doctor, had an MRI, and found that I fracture my ankle bone and would never heal on its own. I was in a hard cast, then walking cast, then physical therapy for about 4 months total. If I had gone to the doctor sooner, I could have cut the hard cast out and my healing time in half.

Is it normal for cuts or deep scrapes to constantly ooze a yellowish fluid that hardens?

Just a few of my sister's bicycle wounds are oozing a yellow fluid that eventually hardens and makes the bandages stick to her skin (making them painful to take off so she can change them). The only other time I've seen this was recently on a mosquito bite on my ankle. My parents say it's normal, but is it?

Does it look red & tender around the area, any red lines/streak running up the limb, and does your sister feel unwell with a fever or chills and is the yellow stuff creamy white, or a clear yellow fluid?

If the yellow stuff is creamy and she has any swelling, tenderness and a red line/streak going up the limb or a fever, she needs to be assessed by a doctor.

If the dressing has stuck to the wound, try soaking it off in warm salty water, pat it dry and apply a non-stick dressing, this will prevent re-opening the wound, every time the dressing is changed, which can cause an infection.

When did doctors start doing lumbar punctures?

Lumbar punctures have been done since the early 1900's. However, they should only be done by a qualified MD…not always a family physician.

What is our crisis in medical care today?

For example, some people are too poor to go to doctors or they can't get health insurance to cover their medical bill. What are some things that we or the governmant can do to give everyone adequate health care? The more relevant information, the better. If you can please also provide any articles that regards about any medical crisis we are facing today or what the government has done to give all americans equal health care will be great! I've search everywhere and it's hard to find them, especially when you're not clear about the topic. Thanks in advance =)

Ill just give 1 idea. Currently, pharmaceutical companies are charging huge amounts of money for their products. Almost every other country regulates what they could charge, and we do not. For example, (all hypothetical) Drug Company wants to charge $1 a pill for nexium. Italy may only allow them to charge $.80, Canada may only allow $.25 and Japan may only allow $.65. Here in America, they can charge whatever they want, so they will charge over the $1 to recoup losses in other countries. We need to place limits on what drug companies can charge, this will lead to cheaper drugs and on to cheaper insurance premiums.

How do you treat a laceration?

My friend got into an altercation and he has a laceration on his face. What are some effective ways to treat a laceration? Note: it's a deep laceration. Thanks
This did happen within a duration of 24 hrs.

Deep lacerations usually need to be stitched.

Did it happen within the last 24 hours?
Is there swelling?
If you answered yes to both, he should go to a minor emergency clinic (see 'clinic' in your yellow pages) for stitches.

If he doesn't get stitches, and it is swelling, he could have a very ugly scar.

Otherwise, clean it with mild soap and water (don't use hydrogen peroxide!), antibiotic ointment, and a butterfly bandage to hold it shut.

Good luck!

How would you feel if due to injury or illness you had to have your reproductive organs removed?

How would you feel if due to injury or illness you had to have your reproductive organs removed?
Women: If you had your ovaries and uterus – as well as your breasts removed – how would you feel about yourself as a woman?

Men: if you had your penis and your balls removed – how would you feel about yourself as a man?

Ovaries and uterus I could perfectly well do without, seen as I don't want kids. Losing my breasts would kind of suck, I guess.. But I think I would most definitely learn to live with it. (Or without it, rather.. =D)

Has anyone experienced Windscreen stress fractures on their VW Polo?

I have owned my car from new, have been in no accidents in it but have had to have the windscreen replaced twice in 12 months because of stress fractures across the bottom of the windscreen. The glass repairer said that there was definitely no impact area anywhere along the crack so it may have been a bump in the metal under the windscreen but they found no evidence of any bumps when they looked… Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone any idea what I should do?!

FORGET THE WINDSCREEN
ITS ONLY PLASTIC ANOTHER $$
GIMMICK.

In terms of context, this would be a first aid kit on a ship traversing the atlantic ocean. If the answer isn’t confined to ships but still relevant (1942) than please answer. thanks

morphine, bandages, penicillin, sutures, aspirin, needles, and scissors.

Drivers – Do you have an effective First-Aid box ??

I agree, you would ensure that all the safety devices are in place before you drive a car. But does that guarantee your safety ?
I have found a first-aid box and hope you'll find it as much helpful by just clicking the link below:

i don't use that First-Aid box persay, but I DO have a pretty elaborate kit in the trunk of my car from Sam's that ended up costing me around $25… so far i haven't had to use it yet, but I'm confident that if the need arose, i'd be well suited!
