My dog has allergic reactions to something outside (unidentified yet) what can i do?

In the past three months my chihuahua has had 2 allergic reactions while being outside, her head (around mouth, nose and eyes) swells really bad. There are no bite marks, or rashes, just swelling. I have taken her to the vet and animal ER, they have treated her for the reactions but cannot identify what causes them. I'm scared to take her outside or leave her alone, is there a way to find out what is causing the reaction?

I have seen this happen a couple times as I worked as a vet assistant. The face commonly swells from a reaction, even if it did not directly contact the allergen. For example, a dog could recieve a vaccine on his rump, but 15 minutes later his eyes, face and throat will swell up. Maybe you can make a list of all the types of insects and plants and chemicals in your chi's living area and cross them out when she doesn't react to them. My guess is that it's an insect of some kind. Maybe your vet, or an allergy specialist in your area may have a list of common allergens. Or maybe you can search online for such a list. Good luck!

  2. One of my dogs has bad skin allergies also. Perhaps you can follow her around or watch her moves to see where she's sticking her face. My dog's allergies are on her back and they seem to be coming from the Leyland Cypress trees that she sleeps under for shade. You have to be particularily careful about short-haired dogs. Good Luck

  4. MAYBE YOU SHOULD PUT YOUR DOG IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU KNOW WHAT IS THERE. WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS PUT HER SOME WHERE YOU KNOW THERE ISN'T NOTHING BUT GRASS AND DON'T LET HER RUN AROUND, AND IF SHE DOESN'T HAVE AN ALLERGIC REACTION THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD KEEP HER IN NOTHING BUT GRASS

  8. You chihuahua may be sticking her nose somewhere she shouldn't ….the first thing that comes to mind is an ant mound. Do you have fire ants in your area? If you have a flower garden, maybe bees?

You need to go out with your dog and observe where she likes to explore. Then you might find the cause.

Ask your vet to prescribe the correct dosage of Benedryl Elixer
(antihistamine) according to her body weight and give your dog the correct dosage as soon as you see the symptoms. If she seems to have trouble breathing after a reaction, take her to the vet.
