How do they remove pins from your broken bones?

by

My husband broke his hand and had 5 pins placed in him to help the healing. I was just curious if anyone has ever had bones “pinned” back together. The pins are the kind that stick out of the skin, and I know that they pull them out with basically a pair of pliers, but do they numb the hand before they proceed?

I broke my arm when i was younger and had 2 pins put in it… and I was freaked out bc they took them out without putting me to sleep.. but they just numbed my arm and took them out. I didnt feel anything but a little tension. But… the numbing shot.. was probably the most painful shot ive ever had….bc they put so much solution in there.. it like stretched my skin bc it had no where to go..so id be ready for that at least

  2. I know personally that for larger screws (foot) they do a nerve block and use sedation so you don’t remember a thing. But I think you may be right, they just use pliers and go for it. Even if he says he is fine afterward, watch him that he doesn’t pass out later.
    Take care

  6. This is just a warning.
My grandma had 3 pins in her arm from a break. The break healed and she went in to have the pins taken out. The gave her a pill under her tongue which did nothing and proceded to pull the pins out. My grandma cried because it hurt so badly and they refused to give her anything else. So we went home and it was discovered that something happened to the nerves in her hand while the pins were being removed and she now cannot use her right hand at all. Her four fingers are stuck in a bent position and she has no nerves in her arm or feeling at all.
So i guess what im saying is just be careful!

  8. yeah, my cousin had to have pins placed inside his hand. he was riding his bike and had a collision and ended up with the bone sticking up through the side of his hand. i know he had pins though i’m not sure how many. anyway, they do numb the hand with a shot. he told me. he said he couldn’t feel much and you have to look hard to see the scars. good luck, i hope your husband’s hand is better : )
