My friend recently had a miscarriage. She blames it on the fact that she is allergic to chocolate and there was a good amount in some dessert she had, but she didn't know because it didn't look like it. Is this actually possible? Could her allergic reaction to chocolate cause a miscarriage?

Probably not. Miscarriages are caused by many things. If she were allergic to a medication or to fish or something, it could be a problem depending upon the severity of her allergy. Chocolate unless you are extremely allergic, causes skin breakouts. She needs to ask her doctor. How did she not know she was eating chocolate?

Without treatment, an allergic reaction causing breathing difficulty could kill you. If you experience this seek medical help immediately. Future exposures could be worse. With proper treatment, anywhere from minutes to hours to lingering problems for days. Treatment is the key!

Vomiting is rarely considered a true allergic rxn. Hives, swelling, rash, etc are allergic reactions. That doesn't mean that the medication that makes you vomit shouldn't be avoided and mentioned to doctors in the future.

In the past three months my chihuahua has had 2 allergic reactions while being outside, her head (around mouth, nose and eyes) swells really bad. There are no bite marks, or rashes, just swelling. I have taken her to the vet and animal ER, they have treated her for the reactions but cannot identify what causes them. I'm scared to take her outside or leave her alone, is there a way to find out what is causing the reaction?

I have seen this happen a couple times as I worked as a vet assistant. The face commonly swells from a reaction, even if it did not directly contact the allergen. For example, a dog could recieve a vaccine on his rump, but 15 minutes later his eyes, face and throat will swell up. Maybe you can make a list of all the types of insects and plants and chemicals in your chi's living area and cross them out when she doesn't react to them. My guess is that it's an insect of some kind. Maybe your vet, or an allergy specialist in your area may have a list of common allergens. Or maybe you can search online for such a list. Good luck!

What is it with our bodies that some have allergic reactions to certain things and others don't?

When your body's immune system senses an "enemy" like a virus, it triggers lots of different actions, including an inflamatory response to help get rid of it. For some reason, certain substances in certain people cause these defenses to falsely react to something. This leads to an inflammatory response, which may be minor, such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes etc. or major, such as swelling throat etc. which can be life threatening. So, basically it is a false inflammatory response. Anti-allergy medicine, such as antihistimines, block these responses from occuring.

Is there such a thing as having a allergic reaction to an oxygen mask used during surgery? Ever since my surgery 3 days ago my throat and inside top of my mouth burns and is red.

You could either have an allergy to the plastic/latex materials used in the tubing, or it could just be raw from the friction of the tube when it was placed.

An allergy might also give you the feeling of closing up. I was intabated about two months ago for an anaphlaytic reaction for three days and I was told that the body needs time to heal.

I have a 4 day old baby girl. My husband is allergic to cats and dogs to where he sneezes and itches and gets blotchy. We would like to go to my parents house but they have 2 cats and 2 dogs. Can my baby possibly get an allergic reaction? Should I keep her away from my parents house?

Actually exposing newborns to animals helps build up their immune system so they are less likely to have severe allergies to animals. Yes they can sneeze at first usually because of pet dander not the pet itself but most grow out of it. It is perfectly safe to have a newborn around animals.

Yes, I know you should go to the doctor. And no, I'm not allergic I just want to know….

First, you will probably start to itch, however, if it is a severe reaction, the itching will begin in your throat, with it tightening and getting hard to breathe. I find that if I start to itch after eating something that I haven't eaten before, I take a benedryl. However, food allergies can be severe and an over the counter medicine might not work. If symptoms start, then calling 9-11 or going to an emergency room would be the first thing to do.

I used a product on my face recently specifically designed for sensitive skin, which I have, and had an allergic reaction (little bumps all over my face, redness, irritation). I have been using Benadryl creme to help get rid of the pain, but it is not clearing up very well. Any suggestions/products?

If it is burning then use a combination of baking soda and water….apply a very thin amount on your face. It will help with the burning and redness. Best of Luck.
