I had an infected abscess on my chest removed on Friday, September 14th, and I was wondering how long such a wound takes to heal? It's about a centimeter long.

The past few days, yellowish material (what I'm guessing is plasma or platelets) have been appearing on the inside of the cut. It's not bleeding, or anything. Also, I am on antibiotics that are supposed to last ten days.

Thanks!

Did you have a "drain" placed. Did the doctor who performed your procedure give you a "follow up" appointment?

Usually when we perform an "I&D" (incision and drainage) of an abscess we put packing in it, we start the patient on antibiotics and have them re-check in two days, remove the drain then have them follow up in about one week if needed.

The abscess should begin to heal rather quickly, it sounds as if it is in the process of healing as long as the "yellowish material" is not foul smelling or appears to be pus.

Call your primary care MD for further information.

This did happen within a duration of 24 hrs.
Deep lacerations usually need to be stitched.
Did it happen within the last 24 hours?

If you answered yes to both, he should go to a minor emergency clinic (see 'clinic' in your yellow pages) for stitches.

If he doesn't get stitches, and it is swelling, he could have a very ugly scar.

Otherwise, clean it with mild soap and water (don't use hydrogen peroxide!), antibiotic ointment, and a butterfly bandage to hold it shut.

Good luck!

If she had deep facial lacerations chances are they sewed the muscular layer and then sewed the epidermal layer chances are what you are seeing are dissolvable sutures from the muscular layer. Give them time to break down. However, if you are concerned always check with your doctor.

if a person had deep face lacerations what cranial nerves would be damaged?

depends on where the laceration is. but CN VII (facial nerve) is more than likely. CN VII gives sensation to the scalp all the way down to the neck, along with face muscles giving expressions. this nerve tracks out from the parotid gland (just in front of your ears) out the middle of it and branches five ways thru out the face.

if the laceration is really deep and broke bones, say a jaw fracture, you could damage CN V (third branch), which gives sensation to your lower teeth. CN V (second branch) innervates the upper teeth, this would slice, if you broke your upper face.

hope it didn't happen to you.

Sores is a term used to describe ulcers or an area that has trauma from an eternal source. A laceration is describing a cut or wound that is inflicted by an external source. Red or irritated areas includes rashes from an allergy, rubbing, scratching, itching or burning to a certain area. And infection is describing a pathogen that has irritated the bodies defense system and caused that area to break down or when the bodies left with little to no white cells to fight a virus or illness.

depends on how jagged the cut was and exactly how deep. the deeper the damage the longer and harder it is to get rid of the scar. time can help a little with discoloration and healing, but once it's a scar that's it ur stuck with it pretty much. if the wound is still healing try keeping aquaphor or neosporin on it. if it's already healed try mederma, it's supposed to help minimize scars.

Lip lacerations rarely need to be closed and usually heal fine on their own. However, the outside edge of the lip should be closed by a professional healthcare provider due to increased chances of scaring and difficulty with wound approximation. In the outdoors, apply pressure and make sure the air way is clear. Due to increased bleeding of all mouth injuries, one should be aware to keep the airway open.
