This is not so much of a first aid kit, but you should get a small box or tote and you'll definitely need:

-LOTS of bandaids
-A big bottle of asprin/tylenol
-A digital thermometer (so you don't have to wait a million years)
-Tea Bags (for hot tea for your sore throat)
-Cepastat throat lozneges (or some other cough drops that have an anesthetic to numb your throat)
-Robutussin
-Kleenex
-Benadryl
-Pepto Bismal
-Tums/Rolaids
-Immodium AD
-Q-Tips
-Cotton Balls
-Rubbing Alcohol
-Peroxide
-Calamine or Hydrocortizone (anti-itch) lotion
-Lotion with a HEAVY moisturizer
-Aloe/Vitamin E (after-sun) lotion
-extra AA and AAA batteries- not very first aid-y, but you'll need them!

I know that sounds like a LOT of stuff and it'll definitely be expensive to put together, but it'll make your life SO MUCH easier b/c
a.) you'll be on your own
b.) it's easier to have it on hand than to go out and get it
c.) and because sometimes in college, you just CAN'T get to the doctor for every ache and pain

good luck!
References :
Really all that you need are band-aids, aspirin, some gauze and something to clean cuts. An ice pack might not hurt either. Unless you are going to nursing school, you will hardly ever need anything more extensive.

You can pick up one at walgreens or any similar drug store.
References :
Err, all the basic things-bandages, antibacterial ointment, aspirin, etc. The essentials of a good first aid kit include a variety of bandages, medications, and equipment to stabilize injuries until proper medical attention can be administered.
