When did doctors start doing lumbar punctures?
Lumbar punctures have been done since the early 1900's. However, they should only be done by a qualified MD…not always a family physician.

These punctures have been done for a long time. They are also known as a Spinal Tap. Any time a doctor needs to examine spinal fluid this procedure is done. They are generally done by an Anestheiosologist. Spinal Taps are used to test for meningitis, lyme disease Multiple Sclerosis to name a few.

I'm not sure when they started it , but I do know it's been done for many yrs. To get diag. for such things a MS. It's a somewhat painful proceadure.
