How to find if my dog’s leg is broken?

the dog tripped down the last two stairs in the house. and he was freaking out at first and screaming. before he could not even elevate it on his own. now he can. but he still seems to be in pain. we dont have the money up front to take him to the vet im a bit worried. what are some signs of a broken bone vs just a sprain? also there is no swelling and there is no discoloration. he just seems to be really uncomfortable moving it.
