How long do ankle sprains last?
I sprained my ankle last night when I ran and didn't see another such a short step off another step! so I landed hard and rolled on it. I don't think it's that bad, maybe grade 1 or 2. There isn't a visible bruise yet but it is swollen up, and definitely really hurts to walk on. I sprained it last summer too, the same way, i think it took about 2 – 3 weeks to recover, but i think this was injured more than last year. how long do ankle sprains usually take to recover?
If you keep moving your ankle without any elastic bandages on it the sprain will last for a month or even more.I suggest you apply a liniment and wrap it with a bandage. You lack more potassium in your body that's why you easily sprain yourself. Eat fruits high in potassium to strengthen those muscles and ligaments.

my mom had a really severe one like 3 years ago.. she was on crutches. she was ok and walking with no swelling after about 4-5 weeks

To know how long an ankle sprain can heal you need to know the extent of the injured structures. If you are recurrent sprains you must wear a pair of shoes that will tighten your ankle thus this will be higher that yr ankle to hold it tight as you run. Normally an ankle sprain last 2 weeks (do not ice it! just immobilize it good!)

six weeks, from experience, if you take good care of yourself.
do the ice thing for the first 48 hours. if the pain is only a 2, you will probably be better sooner than my experience. just be careful!!

Rehabilitation
To successfully treat an ankle sprain, your doctor may suggest you do exercises to restore your ankle's range of motion, strength, flexibility and balance. Usually, these exercises are recommended only after the swelling has gone down, and you've rested your ankle for several days.
If you sprained your ankle while exercising or participating in a sport, talk to your doctor about when you can begin your activity again. If your sport requires sharp, sudden turns — as in tennis, basketball or football — you may have to sit out for several weeks or months, depending on the severity of your sprain, to ensure that your ankle heals properly.
When you do return to your activity, you may have to wear an ankle brace or wrap your ankle for support and protect it from re-injury. But, it's best to use bracing or wrapping as a short-term measure only. You can best protect your ankle in the long term by working to condition and strengthen the muscles around your joint. The best brace you can give yourself is your own "muscle brace." Talk to your doctor about conditioning and strengthening exercises.
Prevention
Take the following steps to help prevent a sprained ankle:
Warm up before you exercise or play sports.
Be careful when walking, running or working on an uneven surface.
Wear shoes that fit well and are made for your activity.
Don't wear high-heeled shoes.
Don't play sports or participate in activities for which you are not conditioned.
Maintain good muscle strength and flexibility.
Mild and moderate sprains usually heal in two to four weeks. Severe sprains may take longer to heal. If pain, swelling or instability persist, see your doctor.
