Why do ankle sprains hurt at night?

I twisted my ankle 4 days ago. After seeing the doctor, I’ve been taking painkillers, using ice, a compression bandage, and elevating my foot. During the day the pain is just minimal, but when I go to sleep it keeps coming back. I haven’t slept in 2 days. Please help.

In the day you are active and the blood is circulating in your ankle. At night the blood goes away and the pain comes back.
