How can you tell if a dog’s leg is broken or sprained?

Dog’s broken leg

I let our little dog chico outside this morning with the big dogs because he had been looking outside and had seen people passing by, and of course heard the other dogs barking, he wanted to go out too. within a few minutes i heard him crying as if he was hurt. we immediately went to bring him in, and my daughter said she had seen one of the bigger dogs standing over him, she thought he may have stepped on chico. he stopped crying, but he is really favoring his left back leg. he’ll take a few steps and then lift it, so i know that it is bothering him. he seems able to bend the leg, and nothing appears to be in the pads of his foot, nothing looks swollen. what should i be looking for and what can i do for him til i’m able to call the vet tomorrow?

Where can I get Turmeric for my dogs sprained or broken leg?

Dogs sprained /  broken leg

Where can I get Turmeric for my dogs sprained/broken leg and how much does it usually cost? Are there any other things I can do to help my dog with her pain and help her heal (besides going to the vet, because I’m a college student and therefore broke)? I’m pretty sure it’s only sprained because she limps on it and can bend it, but then again I’m not a vet so I don’t know.
I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was putting this in general health. I meant for it to go in the Pets section. I haven’t been on yahoo!answers in a long time.
To *Muse*: I don’t think you have any right to criticize my ability to take care of an animal. I’m not going to give up the pet I’ve had for 6 years because I can’t afford a 500 dollar vet bill for a cast. Besides, in this economy, who can afford a vet bill? Also, I’m not trying to cure my dog on my own. I’m trying to take away some of the pain while she is healing. It is a sprain after all, it happens to dogs all the time, especially if they live out in the country. I think that, maybe, you should be looking at your own character and seeing how much you could really love a pet if you’re willing to just give it up when it gets too expensive. I gaurantee you I will find a way to help my dog, no matter how much it costs me, because I love her like a child. And on normal circumstances, she is a very healthy dog. So, what I came here for was advice, not criticism. If you don’t have any GOOD advice for me, then don’t say anything at all.
Again, to Muse: What I took offense to was the part where you said “If you can’t afford a pet, you shouldn’t have one”. I have plenty of money to take my pets to the vet for a check up and medication (my other dog is epileptic and takes seizure medication twice a day), I just don’t have 500 dollars for a cast (which I didn’t need because it was just a sprain). My mother is the one who usually helps me with my vet bills (because she is the one who GAVE me these pets), but she just got laid off last year and is now a full time student just like me. It’s not fair of you to suggest that I can’t afford to “take care” of my pets, I can perfectly well afford most of the amenities required of me as a pet owner (after all, all of my pets are fixed and up to date on their shots), I’m just in a tight spot for cash right now. By the way, my dog is perfectly fine, she has already healed. In fact, I called the vet before I even wrote this and he said it was more than likely a sprain.

The only reason I came on here, was because I needed advice to help her while she was healing. Turmeric is a natural healing plant that Indians (Natives of India) have given their dogs for centuries to help their bones heal and to take away the pain. So, next time you decide to be so judgemental, you should probably check the facts (or at least ask for them). You don’t know the situations of others, so you shouldn’t assume. I used to work for an agency that made calls to raise money for a prominent political party (I won’t say which) and when we called people in Michigan (a state with one of the highest rates of unemployment as of 2005) they couldn’t even give us a nickel. One lady told me she had just lost her job and her dog needed medication, but she couldn’t afford it and she didn’t have anyone in her life that was willing to help her out because they knew she couldn’t pay them back. Do you think I judged her? No.
The advice you gave wasn’t advice at all. It was just rude and you know it. That’s why I got upset; because you judged me before you even knew my situation.

Dog’s sprained leg

So earlier, I went outside and came back in only to see my dog just sitting there in the corner. When he finally got up to walk his front paw was raised in the air and seemed hurt.. He wouldn’t walk on it at first, but now he’s running, jumping on the couch and going up and down the stairs, but there still seems to be pain there, and he still raises it in the air.. I made an appointment with the vet for the next available appt, but do you think I should wait, because it seems to get better as time goes by.. What’s your opinion?

He’s a 1yr old Bichon Frise.

Dogs broken leg vs dogs sprained leg.

I was playing with my dog, and she was on her hind legs, then all of a sudden she started to wimper really badly and running away with her left hind leg clutched really tight.. i got a hold of her and then she calmed down, i put ice on it, but she still cant walk on it, is it sprained or broken?

How much would it be if i got an xray, or if it was broken or sprained. please help!!
shes a chihuahua, shes 7 pounds. she is holding it up, she isnt walking on it, when i move it she doesnt feel pain, she lies on her leg. is it broken or sprained?
she doesnt put it down, she just holds it up
I really want to take her to the vet, but my parents say shes ok. My mom is a nurse and she said we will observe her if she gets better then we wont take her, but if she isnt feeling better by mon we will take her she said.

Dog’s broken legErika C asked:

the dog tripped down the last two stairs in the house. and he was freaking out at first and screaming. before he could not even elevate it on his own. now he can. but he still seems to be in pain. we dont have the money up front to take him to the vet im a bit worried. what are some signs of a broken bone vs just a sprain? also there is no swelling and there is no discoloration. he just seems to be really uncomfortable moving it.
